Custom coloring book vs photo book: which gift should you choose?

Updated September 10, 2026

Choose a photo book to preserve the photographs themselves. Choose a custom coloring book to turn those memories into an activity. A photo book keeps the original colors and detail; DoodleMi redraws your photos as black-and-white line art. The recipient's interest in coloring is the most useful deciding factor.

Choose around the recipient

For a wedding album, old family photographs, or someone who wants the pictures unchanged, choose a photo book. The photographs are the point of that gift.

For a couple who likes creative activities, a grandparent visit with the children, or a pet lover who colors, consider a coloring book. You can pick a familiar scene and spend time working on it together.

DoodleMi prices and page counts

These are DoodleMi's formats, not a market-wide price comparison. Prices are in US dollars before any applicable tax; home printing costs are separate.

DoodleMi prices and page counts
FormatColoring pagesPrice
Printed Mini12, up to 12 photos$19.99; free standard US shipping
Printed Full22, up to 22 photos$24.99; free standard US shipping
Standalone Full PDF22, up to 22 photos$14.99
PDF add-onDigital copy of your printed book$4.99

What if you have only a few photos?

You can make a Mini with fewer than 12 photos or a Full with fewer than 22. Illustrated theme pages fill unused slots. If you want every coloring page based on a personal photo, plan for the full upload count.

A PDF add-on is a digital copy of the coloring book, not a separate photo album. Use it to print a page again or give each person their own copy to color.

Choose around the gift date

Our team aims to email a reviewed PDF within 2 days. Printed US orders have an estimated arrival of 2 to 3 weeks with free standard shipping or 6 to 8 business days with $15 expedited shipping. Compare that with the photo-book provider you are considering.

If you are undecided about the illustration style, make one free page from a photo before choosing a whole book.

Common questions

Can I get a printed book and a PDF?

Yes. Add the PDF for $4.99 at checkout. It contains the coloring pages from your printed book and can be saved for personal printing.

Is a coloring book cheaper than a photo book?

Not necessarily. DoodleMi's printed books start at $19.99, but photo-book prices vary by provider, size, page count, and shipping. Compare the final cost of the formats you want.

Can I see every page before paying?

The book flow previews up to two photo-based sample pages before checkout, not the entire finished book. Our team reviews the completed book before fulfillment.
